Astronomical Observatory
Dr. Thierry Pauwels is chief of the section “Astrometry of Solar System bodies” at the Royal Observatory of Belgium.  At present his main activities are in the context of the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium of ESA's satellite Gaia, where he is leader of the unit which is setting up the software for converting pixel coordinates to sky coordinates for Solar System objects observed by Gaia.  He is also responsible for the digitization activities at the Observatory.  The Royal Observatory has a collection of ~25,000 photographic plates of the night sky, and has built a facility to digitize them, in cooperation with other Belgian Federal Scientific Institutes.  The Royal Observatory will also act as a host for plate collections from other European observatories without resources for suitable storage or digitization.
